" FRIED SQUIRREL" 

Please read when you have a little time.  This is a historical fact from our vacation in Wewoka, Oklahoma on Voting Day, 2004.  A squirrel ran into the transformer, delaying the voting for three hours that evening.  We heard the facts being told on the radio as we drove home the next day.  Jim said, "That sounds like a song".  So here is what I wrote about the "Fried Squirrel" on voting day, 2004.

The polls overflowed on that fateful day; 

When the squirrel from Wewoka made his way;

Through the traffic and hubbub of the big event; 

Little knowing his life soon would be spent. 

Voting was aggressive and tempers flaired;

As results all through the day were aired.

"Get out and Vote!",  was the cry heard 'round the world;

"Get out and Vote!",  as slur after slur was hurled. 

The candidates gave all as they fought through the dust;

Each hoping when it settled, he'd be the one to trust. 

Bush with his West Texas grin, steady and straight;

With his guns in the wind. 

Kerry holding fast for a Right-Wing tailride;

Hoping to fly past the incumbent in a great landslide. 

As drenching rain descended across the land;

Voting frenzie in Wewoka's last surge began. 

"Get out and vote!",  had been the battle cry;

"Get out and vote!... we'll win it or die." 

The squirrel crossed over the line to the Right;

He'd cast his vote for the right one this night. 

A FLASH OF LIGHT!.... some say it was;

When he hit that transformer; Leaving nothing but 'fuzz'.

And so it was in election year two thousand and four;

Just as it had been when Bush met Gore. 

"Recount! ", they cried, "Recount! we say!

There is one vote not tallied today!" 

"We MUST count each vote! We know he's on his way!"

So the polls never closed in that sleepy town...

of Wewoka, Oklahoma; 

One vote they never found. 

And still as they wait for the final round;

The fir still flies in the air to this day;

How would he vote?  No one can say.
